Smiths Falls Police report: Youths charged, stolen phone recovered, multiple arrests

Traffic stop results in arrest

On May 3rd, 2025 at approximately 1:57 a.m., a member of the Smiths Falls Police Service conducted a traffic stop in the downtown core. The driver was identified and found to be in breach of their bail conditions as well as highway traffic violations.

As a result of the investigation, 35-year-old Breige LAMING of Smiths Falls was charged with failing to comply with their bail release order (x1). The accused was also charged under the Highway Traffic Act for driving while under suspension (x1), fail to surrender licence (x1), and drive motor vehicle – no current validated permit (x1). The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to attend court at a later date.

Group of youths facing charges after disturbance

On May 11th, 2025, the Smiths Falls Police Service received multiple 9-1-1 calls for a disturbance in the downtown core between a group of youths. Members arrived on scene and began their investigation.

As a result of the investigation, four youths have been charged with mischief (x1) and assault (x1). The accused parties were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Male facing multiple IPV breach charges

On May 6th, 2025, Smiths Falls Police received information of a possible breach of court-ordered conditions. These conditions originated from a previous intimate partner violence incident.

As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old male of Smiths Falls has been charged with failing to comply with their probation order (x4). The accused was held in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Cell phone theft results in arrests

On April 16th, 2025, Smiths Falls Police Service received a report of a cell phone that was stolen from a local restaurant. Members of Smiths Falls Police commenced an investigation into the theft and were able to identify the suspects with the aid of surveillance footage.

On May 9th, 2025, the suspects from the incident were located and arrested without incident.
41-year-old Matthew BENOIT of Smiths Falls stands charged with theft under $5000 (x1) and breach of recognizance (x1).

36-year-old Joel MOORE of Smiths Falls was also charged with theft under $5000 (x1).

The accused parties were later released with conditions and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Breach investigation leads to arrest

On April 27th, the Smiths Falls Police began an investigation into a possible breach of court-ordered conditions. The conditions stem from a sexual assault and sexual interference investigation out of the Ottawa area.

As a result of the investigation, a 41-year-old male of Smiths Falls was charged with failing to comply with their bail release order (x3). The accused was held in custody pending a bail court hearing.

The charges in these matters have not been proven in court.
