Carleton Place council remembers Ecole Polytechnique victims

At the beginning of the first full council meeting for the newly elected group, a moment of silence was observed to solemnly remember the 14 victims murdered at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec 6, 1989. Councilors Dena Comley, Linda Seccaspina and Sarah Cavanagh read out the names of the young women and Mayor Toby Randell urged anyone at risk or who knew of anyone in a threatening situation to contact the Assaulted Women’s Helpline at 1-855-849-0351.

Committees of council populated

At a special meeting on Monday, Dec 5th, and confirmed by vote on the 6th, council confirmed their representatives to the various public committees it has in place.

Accessibility Advisory Committee – Deputy Mayor Tennant
Business Improvement Area (BIA) Board – Councilor Cavanagh
Environmental Advisory Committee – Councilor Atkinson
Library Board – Councilor Hinton
Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority – Councilor Atkinson, Councilor Comley
Municipal Drug Strategy Committee – Councilor Hinton
Municipal Heritage Committee – Councilor Seccaspina
Parks and Recreation Committee – Deputy Mayor Tennant
Police Services Board – Councilor Comley and Councilor Cavanagh
Urban Forest/River Corridor – Councilor Hinton

Each of these committees (with the exception of the police services board) will have between 5 and 8 members of the public sitting on them with the councilors.

Development permit approved

Council approved a development permit for 85-87 Victoria Street. The property is designated as being in the “Downtown District” in both the Town’s Official Plan and the Development Permit By-law. The applicant is seeking to convert the existing mixed-use building to a residential building with 4 units as a “converted dwelling”. The scope of the application involves applying an easement near the northwest boundary of the vacant property to the east to provide access.

The Committee authorized the approval with the condition that the owner obtain approval from the Land Division Committee for the right-of-way easement and provide confirmation of registration of an easement agreement on title.
