Human remains found at Smiths Falls property linked to murder investigation of Robbie Thomson

SMITHS FALLS — Ontario Provincial Police, leading a Smiths Falls murder investigation, have located human remains at a rural property northeast of Smiths Falls, one day after three people were charged with first degree murder in the disappearance of Smiths Falls resident Robbie Thomson.

Police said the remains have yet to be identified.

Police began searching a residence on Kelly Jordan Road on Oct. 30 as part of the ongoing homicide investigation. Human remains were located on the property later that day. A post-mortem examination will be required to confirm the identity of the remains and determine cause of death.

Thomson was reported missing on Oct. 19, 2023. He was last seen in the Smiths Falls area, and police described him as about six feet two inches tall, medium build, with brown hair and brown eyes. Investigators now believe he was the victim of a homicide.

On Oct. 29, three people were arrested:

  • Christopher Fenton, 48, Montague Township
  • Erin Mackie, 40, Montague Township
  • Joshua Belfiori, 34, Kingston

All three are charged with one count of first-degree murder under section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused appeared for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on Oct. 30. A follow-up appearance is scheduled for Nov. 5.

The Lanark County OPP, the Smiths Falls Police Service, OPP Forensic Identification Services and the Office of the Chief Coroner continue to search the property. Police say it will remain an active scene “for quite some time.”

Residents on Kelly Jordan Road will continue to see a large police presence. Police say there is no risk to public safety.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators is asked to call the dedicated OPP tip line at 1-855-677-4636. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
