Perth receives 126 smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through safety program

Enbridge Gas partnership delivers vital smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

PERTH Perth Fire Services has received 126 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through a province-wide program aimed at reducing fire and carbon monoxide deaths to zero.

The alarms were provided through Safe Community Project Zero, a public education campaign led by the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council with funding from Enbridge Gas Ontario. This year, Enbridge Gas invested $450,000 into the program, which will distribute more than 14,200 alarms to residents in 75 communities across the province.

Over the past 17 years, the program has supplied more than 115,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments.

Perth Fire Services plans to distribute the alarms to households that may not be able to afford them.

“Our department is committed to the safety and well-being of our community. This grant allows us to ensure more families are protected. It is a powerful step forward in our mission to prevent fire-related tragedies,” said fire Chief Trevor Choffe, director of Protective Services.

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas produced by fuel-burning appliances. Working alarms provide early warning of both fire and carbon monoxide exposure.

“Carbon monoxide alarms are a second line of defence against an invisible threat,” said Chris Brennan, senior advisor with Enbridge Gas. “Proper maintenance of fuel-burning appliances is the most effective way to prevent exposure. We are proud to help communities stay safe.”

Jon Pegg, Ontario Fire Marshal and chair of the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council, said the program targets homes with the highest need. “The goal of Safe Community Project Zero is to get alarms where they are needed most and reinforce the legal requirement to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in every home,” he said.

Perth Fire Services is a volunteer department serving the Town of Perth and surrounding area, and responds to a full range of fire and emergency calls.

Residents looking for more information on alarms or fire prevention can contact Perth Fire Services through the town website.
