Construction to begin on Abbott/Lombard intersection May 31

During Tuesday night’s Committee of the Whole meeting in Smiths Falls, town CAO Malcolm Morris shared an update regarding upcoming road construction projects.

The renovation of the Abbott/Lombard intersection is an “exciting construction project we’re preparing to start next week,” Morris explained. This intersection is one of the town’s busiest. The town has been working on a traffic management plan to lessen the impact on vehicle flow through town, however, traffic will be subject to lane reductions and closures. “No doubt it will be disruptive, but necessary,” noted Morris.

Ottawa D Squared, the company that will be in charge of the project, will also be doing resurfacing on Cornelia St. They hope not to have lane closures on both projects on the same day in order to keep traffic flowing. “We’re weaving and stitching all those elements together. It promises to be a busy summer of construction.”

“This sounds like great short term pain for long term gain. Do we have an idea on the timeline?” asked Councillor Chris McGuire

“We’ve given the contractor until September 1 to have it finished,” replied CAO Morris. “We felt it was important to make enough room in the schedule to be able to coordinate both projects.”

Morris expects construction to begin on the sidewalk on the south side of Lombard between Abbott and Ferrara starting Monday, May 31.
