Smiths Falls Bears show strong third-period push against Navan Grads at the den
SMITHS FALLS — The Smiths Falls Bears gave fans plenty to cheer about in the third period of their Oct. 24 matchup against the Navan Grads, but came up just short in a 4–2 loss at the Den. Both teams currently sit second in their respective divisions, making the contest a highly anticipated clash.
The Grads struck early, taking control of the first two periods. Josh Kaufman opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 4:51 of the first period and added another at 5:57 of the second. Wake Purdy then extended Navan’s lead at 6:28, followed by Brody Robertson’s fourth goal at 13:10. The Bears turned to goaltender Rafael Tremblay in the second period, giving him a chance to showcase his skills.
The third period, however, saw a rejuvenated Bears squad mount a strong comeback. Jackson Heron scored on a power play at 1:37, assisted by Davis Heils and Travis Ouellette. Tyson Parker added another goal at 5:25, with helpers from Caeden Heins and Carter Beauchesne, keeping the Bears within striking distance.
Shots on goal were nearly even, with Smiths Falls firing 28 and Navan 27. First star honours went to Josh Kaufman for his two goals, Jackson Heron earned second star for his late-game performance, and Christopher Barlas took third star for two assists.
The Bears faced another tight contest the following night against the Ottawa Junior Senators in Ottawa, falling 4–2. D.J. Ott and Caeden Heins each scored for Smiths Falls during the second period.
With the two losses, the Bears remain second in the Robinson Division with 13 points and sixth overall, tied with the Hawkesbury Hawks. Fans will be eager to see if the team can carry their late-period energy into upcoming matchups.
