Bears sweep weekend series against Renfrew Wolves

SMITHS FALLS — If this were a David Attenborough nature documentary, it might have sounded something like this: “The pack of wolves encircled the Bears, looking for an easy target on their hunt. But once again, the Bears proved their place at the top of the food chain, tearing into the Wolves with their mighty paws and claws during numerous encounters.”

Friday night saw the Smiths Falls Bears face the Renfrew Wolves at the Den. A power play gave Smiths Falls an early opportunity, and at 10:07 of the first period, Davis Hails made it count with his second goal of the season. Assists went to Tyson Parker and Jacob Smith.

The second period stayed scoreless, but the Bears found their stride again in the third. At 6:33, Peyton Veltkamp—set up by Cole Stants and Jackson Heron—extended the lead, securing a hard-fought 2–0 win over Renfrew.

Bears goaltender Ayo Ogini earned a well-deserved first star of the night. Second star went to Davis Hails for scoring the game-winning goal, while Wolves netminder Kale Osipenko claimed third. Smiths Falls held a slight edge in shots on goal, 37–34.

Smiths Falls Bears hold their ground in Saturday rematch

Saturday’s rematch shifted to the MyFM Centre Recreation Complex in Renfrew. Blake Egan put the Wolves on the board first at 10:42 of the second period. Smiths Falls responded at 3:11 of the third, when Lucas Cameron buried the equalizer with help from Jonathan Dudziak and Kade Hockenhull.

Overtime lasted just 1:02 before Marc-Antoine Riopel sealed the win for the Bears, assisted by Jack Paquette and—take note—goaltender Ayo Ogini.

The Bears took this one 2–1.

Riopel earned first star honours, Ogini claimed second star, and Osipenko once again rounded out the list with third.

With the weekend sweep, the Bears sit atop the Robinson Division with 24 points, and third overall in league standings.
