During Monday evening’s Committee of the Whole meeting in Smiths Falls, Senior Planner Karl Grenke presented a recommendation from the CIP Evaluation Committee that town council provide a Planning Fees and Building permit grant totalling $11 500 to Carebridge Community Support.  Carebridge is seeking to build a four-storey, 28-unit residential building at 44 Chambers Street in Smiths Falls.

Mayor Pankow responded, “I’m really pleased to see this come forward. This project has been simmering for over a year, and we’re hopeful that Carebridge will be successful in the very near future. By supporting this recommendation, we are sending the message that we are playing our role in developing affordable housing. This is an exciting project. It fits within the CIP zone and I fully support the recommendation from the CIP committee. “

Councillor Peter McKenna thanked Senior Planner Grenke, the committee and staff, “That’s terrific news. You did a great job.”

Council was in full support of the recommendation to provide this grant.

Development of the affordable housing project is expected to begin before the year’s end.
